(4 Sep 2019) BEN MENDELSOHN WALKS VENICE RED CARPET FOR PREMIERE OF SHANNON MURPHY'S 'BABYTEETH'
Shannon Murphy's bittersweet comedy "Babyteeth" premiered at the Venice International Film Festival Wednesday (4 SEPT 2019) – one of only two films screening in competition at this year's event that's directed by a woman.
It's the debut feature from Murphy, who cut her teeth directing movie shorts and TV shows, including 2018 Australian miniseries, "On the Ropes," about an Iraqi-Australian boxing trainer.
Adapted from Rita Kalnejais' play of the same name, "Babyteeth" tells the story of a couple who discover their seriously ill teenage daughter Milla (Eliza Scanlen) has fallen in love with a smalltime drug dealer – an event that forces them to consider desire, family and trauma from a new perspective.
Cast members Ben Mendelsohn, Toby Wallace and Essie Davis were among those joining Murphy on the red carpet.
"Babyteeth" is one of 21 films at Venice competing for the festival's top prize, the Golden Lion.
