"Les Misérables," originally a novel published in 1862 by Victor Hugo, was adapted into a seven-part radio series by Orson Welles in 1937. Set in post-revolutionary France, the story follows Jean Valjean, a former convict who is transformed by a single act of kindness from a merciful bishop. After being released from a 19-year prison sentence for stealing a loaf of bread, Valjean breaks his parole and adopts a new identity, determined to lead a life of virtue.
As Valjean builds a new life, he comes across Fantine, a destitute woman forced into prostitution to support her daughter, Cosette. Upon Fantine's death, Valjean vows to care for her child. Conflict arises as Valjean is relentlessly pursued by Inspector Javert, a dogged policeman who believes in the absolute enforcement of the law.
Valjean's journey brings him into the heart of the socio-political struggles of France, including the June Rebellion of 1832. Along the way, he encounters various characters, such as the young lovers Marius and Cosette, and the street-smart urchin Gavroche. Valjean's ultimate test comes as he risks his freedom and life to help others, embodying themes of justice, love, and redemption.
Orson Welles directed, adapted, and starred as Jean Valjean in the radio series, supported by actors Martin Gabel as Javert, Alice Frost as Fantine, and Virginia Nicolson as Cosette. The production marked the radio debut of Welles's Mercury Theatre and is celebrated as one of his early, significant achievements in radio drama.
