Thai navy receive the Type 071ET dock landing ship at Hudong zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai. The ship 071ET is the largest warship in service in Southeast Asia.
In September 2019, China and Thailand officially signed the purchase contract of 071ET. This is the first time China has exported a large amphibious landing ship. The purchase of the ship is part of the Thai Navy's 20-year plan to bring all four of these large amphibious ships into service by 2036 for a variety of operations. On January 4, 2023, Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Navy Admiral Sirisava attended the launching ceremony of the ship held in Shanghai and confirmed the official name of the ship HTMS Chang 3.
Chang is based on the People's Liberation Army Navy's own Type 071 dock landing ship, which is a global leader in performance. The "Chang" is 213 metres long and 28 metres wide, has a top speed of 25 knots and a range of 10,000 nautical miles, the Bangkok Post said. According to public data, the Chang has a displacement of more than 20,000 tons and can carry at least 600 Marines and two amphibious landing craft, as well as up to five helicopters such as the Sea Eagle, which are in service with the Thai Navy. At the same time, the loading and delivery capacity of the Chang dock landing ship and its far-sea maneuvering capacity have reached the international advanced level.
The Thai media also made a special comparison between the size of the "Chang" and the Thai navy's current light aircraft carrier and small dock landing ship, and found that the size of the "Chang" dock landing ship is longer than the size of the Thai Navy's "Zarek Nalube" aircraft carrier, and is about twice the size of the "Antong" class light dock landing ship previously built by Singapore for Thailand. This shows the huge size of the 20,000-ton Chang.
Moreover, the cost performance ratio of 071ET is very prominent in comparison with warships of the same performance category. According to Thai media reports, the price of this ship purchased by the Thai side is about 200 million US dollars, while the original cost of a SAN Antonio class dockyside transport ship, which is the counterpart of 071ET, was 890 million US dollars.
The Royal Thai Navy also revealed it would send another team of officials between April 12 and April 17 to discuss whether to buy Chinese-made CHD620 submarine engines, the Bangkok Post said.
