How to grow lemongrass at home from store bought stalks
This time we will plant lemongrass / citronella in pots, from cuttings not from seeds, but the principles is the same
We will discuss everything, from altitude, planting media, water requirements, pests, etc
the first thing to pay attention to
1. Lemongrass likes fertile soil
so we use a mixture of soil and compost 1:1
This nutrition is more than sufficient until harvest
no extra fertilizer needed
We use store-bought lemongrass
just plant it and leave it
This is after 2 months
so the second thing we have to pay attention to is
2. Lemongrass likes full sun,
So after we plant it, we immediately place it under the full sun
3. Lemongrass can grow well in any altitude
our place is only 7 meters above sea level, so it's very low, but it can still grow well
Even at an altitude above 1000 meters above sea level, lemongrass can still grow well
we transfer to the final container
Now, we don't use fertilizer, and we don't really need it, as long as the planting media is a mixture of soil and 1:1 compost
Later you will see for yourself if this has provided enough nutrition, even excess
4. provide a large enough container
Our suggestion is that the minimum volume is 25 liters
because in general, the larger the container, the bigger the plant will grow
there are exceptions, but lemongrass is not one of them
5. try to plant before the start of rainy season
so when the lemongrass start getting big we will have entered the rainy season
This is because lemongrass needs enough water to grow well
if you plant in the dry season you will need to water it up to 3 times a day
and this is a lot of work
this is after 6 months
a relly good thing about planting lemongrass is
6. Lemongrass has no pests
even rats, snails, and grasshoppers do not like this plant,
it actually repel animals and pests
that's why try to plant lemongrass among your other plants such as chilies and tomatoes
it will protect them from pests
the plant has grown too big for the container
and there are already dry leaves and stems at the bottom
a sign that it's time for us to harvest
we can harvest them at once
or take one stalks at a time
when we take it out of the container we can see that it has a lot of roots
but not to the extreme that the soil runs out
this indicates that the planting medium we use provides more than enough nutrients until it is ready to be harvested
Don't forget to replant some of the stalks
