For the past few days, Chinese athletes have been presenting outstanding performances at the Paris Olympics. China’s men triumphed over FIBA world No. 1 Serbia in the 3X3 basketball qualifying round on Wednesday. At this year’s Summer Olympics, they’ve got an AI coach on site, that can tell…… "Which 2 players are passing the ball more closely and work better together. We can also see under which conditions they perform well from their thermodynamic chart." said Yang Peixin, Senior Algorithm Engineer at SenseTime's Smart Sports Department.
The application was developed by China’s AI giant SenseTime, Shanghai University of Sport and Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
Wang Ran, Vice Dean of the School of Athletic Performance at Shanghai University of Sport said "Previously, players had to wear equipment like a GPS vest. But that’s not allowed during competitions. So it was impossible to have the real-time feedback during the competition. But now, with AI, and algorithms based on computer vision, we can give that feedback. Previously, we needed many people to stay up late until the competition ends and edit the video to do the analysis. But now, with the help of AI, we can give the load data back to the coach real-time."
It’s the first time that such AI tool has been applied at the Summer Olympics.
