I keep a rough tally of what I've spent on the allotment and the value of my harvests. I harvest into two litre containers and I count those and assign a very conservative value to their contents. Sometimes it's a little too much, more often it's too low, but the objective is to be simple and conservative.
I've harvested 1500 containers so far, that's about £3000 in value. I've spent roughly £1400, most of that on four things: the polytunnel, two big nets and frames, lots of compost and seeds.
I have most of the seeds for next year now, I'm not buying another polytunnel and I'm going to be fully stocked up on compost by August, so next year I'm not expecting to spend more than £200, which is less than an average weeks harvest - pretty good progress, even if I do say so myself.
