An owl tetradrachm from the city of Athens, struck circa 454-404 BC, likely from silver mined in the Laurion mines. These coins were minted in massive numbers to fund large building projects such as the Parthenon and the Peloponnesian War and became the dominant trade coin of the Mediterranean.
