Canon make various lines of lenses and they all have their place. USM, STM, Standard (DC / Direct Drive). I will be comparing the Canon 50mm f1.8 STM with the Canon 24-70mm USM f2.8 L at 50mm focal length to give you the main differences in performance.
Which lens is right for you depends on what you are going to do with it. This video will give you the key differences between USM and STM vs the original style of auto focus lenses and you can make your decisions from there.
