(8 Jun 2012) About 110,000 people packed into Warsaw's fanzone to watch Greece and Poland draw 1-1 in the first match of the European Soccer Championships on Friday.
The mood after the game was sombre.
"It's not yet a tragedy, but it could be better," said one Polish supporter.
"It wasn't bad and I think that it will be better next time," another fan added.
In the fanzone home fans chanted "Poland, the white-and-red team", clapped in unison and held "Poland" scarves above their heads as they watched the game on two giant televisions screens.
During the game, the mood among Poland's expectant supporters shifted from enthusiastic cheering to silent disbelief and finally to resigned relief.
The host nation took an early lead in a dominant first-half performance with a goal from Robert Lewandowski.
But then came Greece's equaliser by Dimitris Salpingidis and a red card for Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
But Greece's penalty was saved by replacement keeper Przemyslaw Tyton.
After the game, the sombre mood was shared by Greek fans, hoping for a win to lift their spirits amid the unending financial crisis at home.
"I'm a bit frustrated because we should have won. We lost the penalty and we played very well in the second half. But this is life. I hope we do better in the next match," said Greek supporter Stephanos Papadopalous.
Another Greek fan said his side should have won but remained positive.
"I think we played with ten men and we did great," he said.
