The life and death of Joseph Attean is a story of epic proportions in annals of Maine History. Joseph lived life for his Penobscot Indian people. From Indian Island Maine he lived in the middle half of the 19th century. His life exemplified honor, patriotism, valor, and at death Heroism. Joseph Attean dies on the fourth of July near Millinocket Maine, driving logs down the Penobscot River. This video explores his rich life and his tragic death. A proper story for a former Chief of the Tribe, and Henry David Thoreau’s 1853 guide to Chesuncook Lake where Attean shoots a moose. A classic tale in the classic environs of the Maine Woods.
