(18 Jun 2018) Speaking at The Women's Forum of New York luncheon, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy of separating children from their parents at the southern US border is "horrific."
Republican President Donald Trump has defended the harsh immigration policy, which has taken nearly 2,000 immigrant children away from their parents at the US-Mexico border.
Trump has blamed Democrats for the separation of families at the border and is pressuring them to negotiate with Republicans on an immigration bill.
But the separations are a consequence of the Trump administration "zero tolerance" policy, announced in April, which maximizes criminal prosecutions of people caught trying to enter the US illegally.
That means more adults are jailed, pending trial, so their children are removed from them.
Clinton chastised the blaming of Democrats. "That is an outright lie," she told the audience.
The separation policy has come under increasingly harsh criticism, with accounts of children being kept in cages and parents not knowing where their children are.
