Bart Simpson may seem an unlikely spokesman for tolerance and understanding, but it was the new multiplicity of sects that came out of the Great Awakening of the 18th century that required that Americans put up with each other. While many of these groups would have loved to force their views on others, once every sect in America had become a minority, they had no choice but to advocate religious toleration, if only out of self-preservation.
