Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula has admitted that the licence renewal system is a mess. 1,2 million drivers' licences have not been renewed, with an August 31 deadline looming. In the face of this massive backlog, Mbalula has announced that the renewal grace period for learners' and drivers' licenses has been extended to March 31 2022.
Licence renewal centres will operate seven days a week to clear the backlog.
Mbalula says Gauteng posed the biggest challenge due to the number of motorists and corruption that has bedeviled the system. Several motorists - whose licenses expired between March and December last year - complained that they have been unable to make renewal bookings.
