In the ancient city of Pompeii, flatbread held a place of prominence as a staple food. Excavations have uncovered approximately forty bakeries, with the largest featuring multiple mills, a dough mixing apparatus, and a substantial oven that could produce as many as two-thousand loaves daily. Among the discoveries were eighty charred loaves of bread found preserved within the ovens. The loaves, typically around nine-point-eight inches in diameter and weighing approximately five-hundred and eighty grams, were often adorned with fruits, nuts, and seeds, showcasing the culinary expertise of Pompeii. The unveiling of stunning murals depicting the art of bread-making has intensified the city's fervor for this essential dish.
