Growing up in the Great Lakes as I did, I remember vividly taking family vacations in the Lake Erie Islands, swimming in the Lake toward a floating raft only to be scared out of my mind when that floating raft had what I remember to be a pile of snakes sunning themselves or in my frantic swim away seeing one in the water cross my path. Yes- I'm afraid of snakes. But they clearly have more to fear from us because despite their bravado the Lake Erie water snakes at one time faced near extinction.
Today when the months of May and June roll around, if you're a Lake Erie big water angler you begin to start looking for the snakes. And despite what you hear in this Quick Spin, we're actually really lucky that we see them. Captain Jeff Liskay welcomes them every year and has had some exciting trips watching them hunt and feed alongside the fish. And recent reports from the Ohio DNR seem to say they may even be gobbling up those nuisance goby, which is great for our resident Bass.
