In this installment, I am filing, beveling and dressing the ends of the frets. Then I level, crown, round-over and redress the frets before polishing to a mirror shine.
The techniques that I use for the fret end dressings with the Stew-Mac 1175 file can also be used for addressing fret sprout in the winter when the wood contracts.
My fret leveling beams are pieces of aluminum rectangle stock that have been filled with rice for weight and then capped on the ends. These beams only need to be straight. They do NOT need to be milled to a tolerance of 0.001 inch. By the time you are done with the job the wood will have moved farther than that anyway.
