The Tallinn Song Festival Grounds are a public space of epic proportions. It is here that every 5 years the Song festival is held in which up to 25,000 singers take part in front of an audience of up to 100,000 people.

We visited in August 2020.

The stage can house 15,000 at a time and the audience crowd onto the bowl shaped grass hill that it faces. In the late 1980's this was the setting for the singing revolution when the Estonian population gathered in defiance of Soviet rule in peaceful protest. At the height of the revolution over 300,000 people gathered here to sing for their freedom which was finally achieved in 1991.

It's a fascinating site to visit with an interesting history. You can enter the grounds for free when there no concerts being held and you can climb the lighthouse (a large tower) for €2 for views out to the Baltic sea.

It is only a short 4km walk out from the tourist area of Tallinn old town via the beautiful Kadriorg Park or along the very attractive Pirita Tee promenade. This makes it a perfect spot for a Frugal Travel free day out with a picnic, a nice walk and no entry costs!
