After my interview, I flew to Changchun from Wuhan and started my journey with WWF.
It was a blessing to work with WWF and to meet so many interesting people along the way! The whole trip made me feel both optimistic and heartbroken. The area I went to was largely in poverty. The kids had limited resources and the way teachers taught was appalling, to the extent that it’s not exaggerating to say that they are ruining a whole generation (the principals had their “success talk” and paths planned out for the kids.) Still, I can’t blame them because they haven’t seen much and weren’t adequately educated themselves. Although living in such an underserved environment, the kids were very curious (they were so adorable that I felt sad leaving them!) They never knew anything about environmental protection, but after the lessons, they were eager to try out a low-carbon life.
It’s been a fulfilled journey learning more about environmental protection work to the basics; however, I’ve also noticed flaws––flaws in NGO management, flaws in human resources in underserved places, flaws in waste reduction, flaws in education, etc. Since I become aware of these problems, I will pay more heed to these problems and look for solutions as I continue my studies.
