Procedures and transitions govern how a classroom runs on a day to day basis. Nearly every function in a classroom boils down to a procedure and/or a transition: what should a student do upon entering a classroom, how do students collect materials, and how should students move to get into groups? These are a few of the most important questions you’ll need to answer!

One of the most effective ways to influence student behavior is by setting clear expectations. Teaching procedures and transitions to your students early into the school year and then creating opportunities for periodic reminders, will allow students to know exactly how your class should run. These defined parameters will help students to thrive because they will feel secure with the routine. You will find that successful procedures and transitions will lead to a decrease in student misbehavior and an increase in instructional time.

Use the Procedures and Transitions Checklist provided above to take stock of your classroom procedures! For each transition listed, identify if you have a procedure in place. If you do not, create one! Ask how effective your procedures are: are they being followed? Are your directions clear and easy to find in the classroom? Do students need to rehearse the procedure? Explain your procedure in the final column. Reflect on your checklist, then make additions and changes as needed.

Unless you practice these procedures and instructional patterns regularly, students are likely to forget the details of what they performed and how important they are. For this reason, you may want to schedule a time every week, and then every month or so, to review the procedures with your students. Hold them accountable for your procedures.!
