The leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, called for nationwide celebrations on December 13 to honour "the victory of the revolution." Jolani led a successful offensive against Bashar al-Assad’s regime, marking a significant victory for Syria’s rebel forces. Jubilant crowds gathered in Damascus, where thousands raised the three-star Syrian independence flag. The celebrations, once unimaginable under Assad’s rule, extended across Syria, from Aleppo to Sweida. In Aleppo, a massive billboard of Bashar and Hafez al-Assad was set on fire. Interim Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir addressed a crowd at Damascus’s Umayyad Mosque while the HTS-led transitional government promised judicial reforms and the protection of Syrian rights. The United Nations refugee agency has noted a marked improvement in the freedom of movement for Syrians, although its future remains uncertain.
