1. Chittorgarh Fort: The Chittorgarh (also known as Chittor Fort), is known to be the largest fort in India. This fort was popular as the capital of Mewar and is situated in the present-day city of Chittorgarh in Rajasthan state. It is located over a hill which is 180 m (590.6 ft) in height and is spread across an area of 280 ha (691.9 acres) above the plains of the valley which is drained by the Berach River.
2. Amer Fort: Amer Fort or Amber Fort is a popular fort which is situated in Amer area of Jaipur, Rajasthan. Amer is a town which is spread across an area of 4 square km and is located 11 kilometres away from Jaipur, which is the capital of Rajasthan. Situated high on a hill, it is known to be a principal tourist attraction in Jaipur. Amer Fort is well known for its artistic style elements.
3. Mehrangarh Fort: Mehrangarh Fort is spread across an area of 1,200 acres and is located in Jodhpur city of Rajasthan, India. The complex is situated on a hilltop which is around 122 metres above the surrounding plain, and was built in c.1459 by Rajput ruler Rao Jodha, although most of the fort's existing structure is from the 17th century.
4. Kumbhalgarh Fort: Kumbhalgarh Fort, also called the Great Wall of India, is a well known Mewar fortress located on the westerly range of Aravalli Hills, just around 48 km from Rajsamand city in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan. It is situated about 84 km from Udaipur and is also a World Heritage Site that is included in Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
5. Jhansi Fort: Jhansi Fort or Jhansi ka Qila is a fort which is located on a large hilltop known as Bangira, in Uttar Pradesh. It actually served as a stronghold of the Chandela Kings in Balwant Nagar (Jhansi's old name) from the 11th till the 17th century. The construction of the Jhansi fort is was done by the Bundela Rajput chief and the ruler of the Orchha's Kingdom, Veer Singh Deo Bundela in 1613.
6. Gwalior Fort: The Gwalior Fort is a known to be a hill fort located in Gwalior city of Madhya Pradesh. The fort is known to be existing since the 10th century, and the inscriptions as well as the monuments found within the complex indicate that it may have even existed as early as the beginning of the 6th century.
7. Red Fort: The Red Fort or Lal Qila is known to be a historic fort located in the Old Delhi, and is known to have historically served as the primary residence of the Mughal emperors. Emperor Shah Jahan started the construction of the Red Fort on 12th May 1638, when he thought to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi.
8. Agra Fort: The Agra Fort is known to be a historical fort in Agra, and is often referred as Agra's Red Fort. It was built by the Mughal emperor Akbar in the year 1565 and was completed in the year 1573. It used to serve as the main residence of the Mughal rulers until 1638, when the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi. It was also called as the "Lal-Qila" or "Qila-i-Akbari".
9. Jaisalmer Fort: Jaisalmer Fort is located in Jaisalmer city of Rajasthan state in India. It is known to be one of the very few "living forts" in the world (like Carcassonne in France), as almost 1/4th e old city's population still lives within the fort. For the better part of its history which is 860-year old, the fort was known to be the city of Jaisalmer.
10. Junagarh Fort: Junagarh Fort is a fort located in the city of Bikaner, Rajasthan, India. The fort was first known as Chintamani and was renamed Junagarh or "Old Fort" in the early 20th century when the ruling family moved to Lalgarh Palace which is located outside the fort limits. It is known to be one of the few major forts in Rajasthan which is not constructed on a hilltop.
