The ADHD medication shortage has affected individuals throughout the country for several years now. This video aims to provide a brief summary regarding some of the reasons for the shortage and additional information to help patients and providers navigate this issue.
Some of the reasons for the shortage discussed include an increase in awareness and normalization regarding the treatment of ADHD, an increase in availability of Telehealth medicine, big business likely taking advantage of the above (and increasing prescriptions to both patients with and without ADHD (a significant concern) and sanctions and regulations placed on manufacturing labs and plants.
We also discuss that if a patient has ADHD, if their medications work well for them, they take them as prescribed, and if they have limited side effects, stimulant medications can be a vital part of treatment. Providers should take the extra time to discuss options within this class of medications, that do in fact, have better availability than others. It can be frustrating that many providers do not take the time to discuss that there are options, that are available, even during the shortage.
