In this next lesson on TBI, we take a look at secondary brain injury. This is a very important topic to know and understanding because these are some of the big problems that come up following a primary brain injury.
A primary brain injury is the initial injury as a result of the initial impact. These can certainly be severe and potentially fatal, but the cascade of events and changes that the primary brain injury sets off can lead to changes that ultimately lead to even more damage to the brain, something that we call secondary brain injury.
In this lesson I talk about the 3 main groups of contributors to secondary brain injury and break down each one of the contributors with these groups to give you guys a good understanding of what is happening and how this potentially leads to additional damage to the brain. With a good understanding of this information, you will be better prepared for the next lesson in which I will be taking a look at the strategies to managing patients with traumatic brain injury and the ways in which we try prevent these secondary brain injuries, which can be just as deadly as the primary.
