Number 1 in disguise: Writing 0.9 recurring as 1
Video showing how to use algebra to write a recurring decimal as an integer or fraction (rational number). There will be more videos to follow up on this idea in the future so keep an eye out for them. This video is aimed at KS3 and GCSE maths. This idea can be used for things like proving that 0.3 recurring is perfectly equal to 1/3 and so on.
In a nutshell:
*By calling the recurring number ‘x’ and then scaling it up in powers of ten, it becomes possible to subtract and cancel the infinite mess of numbers. This allows us to write the number as a rational number.
