The Willamette Valley just got the same international wine recognition that Napa Valley has—the only two American wine regions to receive the distinction. The Willamette Valley recently received formal recognition and protection by the European Union with what's called protected geographical indication or PGI status approval. The acknowledgment both affirms and protects the Willamette Valley's reputation for quality. It makes sure outside producers looking to profit from the respected Willamette Valley name can't claim to be from the region when they are not.
