Seventy percent of our sails are partially salt affected and patches of badly salt affected soils are scattered throughout Punjab. Wheat is fairly salt tolerant crop but its germination is hindered in such soils. If once germination is acquired, it may be raised successfully through the use of acidic fertilizers. For example 12.5 kg of urea phosphate 18:44 may be fertigated along with 25-30 kg of urea fertilizer at 1st irrigation and the same amount of acidic NPK 16:22:23 (Swat Agro) at 2nd irrigation may give it as good boost as in healthy soils. Use of sulphur coated urea is also suggested. Deficiency of Phosphorus may also be compensated with 1-2 sprays of Speedfol P within 1st two months of planting.

A huge acreage of clayey, salt affected and low lying soil is located in the rice zone of Punjab. Planting of wheat crop after rice is very difficult in some areas and its sowing is hampered in several other areas due to non-approach of proper moisture condition after coarse rice crop in the core area of rice zone. In this video, we have advised the farmers either to manage bed planting with the help of specialized bed shaper cum planter or adopt augmented furrow/bed methods in such clayey and salt affected soils where water holding capacity is extraordinary more than most common fields of the area. Gap chat method has also been proposed to avoid late sowing of wheat after late maturing basmati rice.
Wheat crop is a cash crop of Pakistan. It has the potential to uplift the economy of farmers by getting higher yield. This can be achieved if weather conditions and soil health support the crop production. But this is very difficult to achieve in salt affected soil. In this video I have described a new way to achieve maximum yield from a salt affected soil. If this approach is adopted, production of wheat crop can be enhanced considerably.
