In 102 BC, the Battle of Aquae Sextiae marked a turning point for the Romans led by Gaius Marius. After a series of defeats at last, the Romans emerged victorious over the Teutones and Ambrones. The outcome was a near annihilation of the Teutones and Ambrones forces. According to Roman accounts, around 90,000 enemy soldiers were killed, and approximately 20,000 were taken captive. Among those captured were a significant number of women and children who were later sold into slavery. Some of these survivors are believed to have joined the ranks of rebelling gladiators during the Third Servile War.
