How can a ported choke tube reduce shotgun recoil? There are many opinions but all the really matters is does porting make a real measurable difference. Here I test a ported vs. non ported choke using a recoil sensor and multiple types of shotgun shells to get real quantitative data on the subject. If a ported choke really can reduce felt recoil, even by just a little, it could be very helpful for hunters and target shooters alike. I reached out to the manufacturers of chokes to see what they say, and the results were mixed, so it was time for a recoil test.

The results of this experiment were surprising. I shot some moderate Remington Sporting Clays target loads with 1 1/8 oz at 1200 fps and some heavy BOSS Copper Plated Bismuth #1 with 1 5/8oz at 1350 fps. I leaned several good lessons. First, the heavy loads were too much for me to use hunting ducks, geese or anything else, there was just too much recoil for me to use them effectively. Second I learned I needed ALOT more data to answer this question well. Do ported choke tubes really lower shotgun recoil? Maybe. But you're going to have to wait for the sequel to find out for sure.
