The year 2014 ranks as the warmest on record since 1880, according to two separate analyses by NASA and NOAA scientists.
First animation shows a time series of five-year global temperature averages, mapped from 1880 to 2014, as estimated by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. Second animation shows Earth’s surface temperature in 2014 compared to the 1981-2010 average. Last animation shows monthly maps of difference from average temperatures for each month January through December 2014, based on data from NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center.
