How much protection do you need in beginner motorbike gear? Your type of riding. Your budget for motorbike protective gear? Hot weather, cold weather, wet weather? Or all three? A bit of research makes a big difference. You can find cheap protective gear that actually works quite well. Do you need motorbike armour? You can find CE motorbike jackets that is simply a waste of money. Perhaps motorbike jeans will be enough. The good news? There is a very easy way to get around fancy words and bullshit claims of manufacturers. The CE rating system to choose the best motorbike gear for beginners. Denier. D30. Ballistic nylon. Cordura. Gore-tex. SAS-TEC. Dyneema. Kevlar. The Europeans have spent seven years on a new standard for motorbike protective gear... EN17092 and motorbike armour explained! This replaces the old EN13595 standard. The rating system is still very simple too for buying the best motorbike gear. AAA is the best. It's usually for the racetrack and things like CE motorbike pants. It will last for a four second slide along the road at 120kmh. AA rated motorbike gear is more suited to touring. It should last for a two second slide at 70kmh, even with ventilated motorbike gear. A rated riding gear is slower urban riding. A one second slide at 45kmh. And B has no impact protection or abrasion rating at all. The standard covers impact abrasion resistance, impact energy absorption, strength of seams and zips, tear strength, fit and ergonomics, and not changing shape when washed - perfect for our AAA rated motorbike protective gear guide. Research in 2021 found that most motorbike protective gear fails to meet the standards whether it's cheap motorbike gear or expensive in some cases. "Most of the motorcycle protective clothing has failed to meet out the quality standard protocols". So it's great to have a rigorous CE certified protective gear testing system that is easy to understand... from a AAA rating to A. But it's important to make sure your protective gear is actually CE certified! This means testing by an approved third party. Sometimes you will see armour that is marked CE Tested. It has only been tested by the manufacturer themselves. It might be marked CE Approved. This means the whole garment has not been certified, only certain parts. Watch out for cheap Chinese products with fake labels. If the price is too good to be true, it is probably a fake. There is always a booklet explaining the certification with genuine garments. There will be a website link in there to the document of certification. Are you an adventure rider? Currently there is only one AAA rated jacket and pants we know of... Klim Badlands Pro. There is quite a bit of AA rated gear if you search hard enough. And of course there is plenty of A rated riding gear. And the majority has no rating at all. It is tough for adventure riders as we usually want lots of venting and waterproofing. So a AAA rating needs lots of expensive materials and careful manufacturing. Road riders? It's much easier to find AAA rated riding gear as ventilation and waterproofing aren't as necessary. Quite a few leather jackets are highly rated. Always try to avoid cheap leather jackets and pants with only a single line of stitching. These easily pull apart when sliding down the road and can leave you with no protection. It happened to me. A leather jacket ripped apart the moment it touched the road surface. Useless! Some motorbike jeans now have the AAA rating and are much cheaper than the equivalent adventure pants. This can be a great option if you just carry some wet weather gear to use over the jeans. Me? I love budget options for things like gloves. But years ago I decided to move up to AA rated gear and bought the Klim Induction jacket and pants. I am thinking of the AAA gear but it is bloody expensive! What about you? Do you buy the best riding gear available, despite the cost? Or do you research everything and get the cheapest products available? Let us know what you are using and why.
