STORYLINE:
A major spy scandal erupted on Wednesday when Russia's main counter-intelligence agency, the Federal Security Service, announced it had thwarted a United States' CIA attempt to purchase classified documentation on advanced Russian weaponry, and recruit a Russian national working for a top-secret installation.
The Federal Security Service, the chief successor to the Soviet-era KGB secret police, has provided television footage showing one alleged participant in the CIA operation, a secretary in the United States embassy's consular department.
The footage also showed a place where alleged American spies hid money for their Russian contact.
A former Soviet spy, Mikhail Lyubimov, a retired agent of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Agency who spied on the United Kingdom in London, believes the latest espionage scandal likely will embarrass presidents Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush ahead of their summit in May.
Lyubimov said even friendly countries now spy on one another, with Russian military technology being the main target for CIA spying.
