The McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering hosted Texas ChE professor and Energy Institute Director Brian Korgel for a discussion of his work on the development of next generation solar cell technologies and the route to a sustainable energy future with net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
**NOTE: at around the 15:00 minute mark, Prof. Korgel showed a slide with a typo. Instead of "Capital cost: $779 billion," the slide read "$779 trillion." The other numbers on the slide are correct.**
Global energy sustainability represents one of the most important challenges facing modern society. Energy demand will continue to grow while greenhouse gas emissions need to be significantly reduced. And energy needs to be made accessible to all people on the planet. Sunlight provides a widely available renewable energy resource that can be converted directly to electricity by photovoltaic devices (PVs), or solar cells. Solar power is providing one of the most important emerging energy resources that can help address the world’s greatest energy and climate challenges.
