Learning & Outreach Officer at The Cartoon Museum Steve Marchant presents the museum's Autism Programme in a talk with TBIH's Russell Briggs. It won the Museums + Heritage Award 2023 for Community Engagement Programme of The Year.
In 2022 the museum received funding from the Foyle Foundation to enhance its offer for neurodiverse visitors, aiming to use the comic collection to support wellbeing activities and make the site more accessible. It delivered a new SEN school workshop, Relaxed Monday events, sensory backpacks, noise-cancelling headphones, a site guide, and a partnership with a young local autistic artist as our first Young Cartoonist-in-Residence. The programme was widely praised by partners and visitors, embedded into the museum's everyday practise, and was awarded a Museums & Heritage Award for ‘Best Community Programme’.
