Tom Bombadil shows up and he's less jolly, gaslights Gandalf, and is essentially the desert hermit guiding the apprentice wizards--the Ben Kenobi of Middle-earth.

Then there's Dark Wizard who sits and does nothing and lets Rhun's best trackers fail again.

And sadly, but expectedly, the Harfoots survive the tornado only to meet the Stoors, another sociopathic halfling tribe that leaves people to be consumed by the desert.
