The Gorges de Saint-Georges is a short, only about 300 meters long, but very deep and steep rock cut through a karst bar in the Pyrenees. A medieval monastery located nearby gave the gorge its name. The gorge, carved into the rock by the Aude River, is located just a few kilometers south of the town of Axat. The D118 balcony road runs along the east side just a few meters above the river. Heavy rains and snowmelt often cause flooding here. The road is narrow, so two-lane traffic is not possible. The passage through the gorge is regulated by an automatic traffic light system. The road is easy to drive on and continues south into the Gorges de l'Aude. The gorge is located in the Occitania region and here in the department of Aude.
This route belongs to the so-called "French Balcony Roads".
