Overwatch 2 Player Vs Environment content is officially dead as of this week, but if you’ve been paying attention, you would know that this is the end game for a long time now. OW2 was originally sold to players as a whole new world for Overwatch - PVE, story content, a reimagining of what players had come to expect from what was the hottest multiplayer game in the world at one point.
But when Overwatch 2 launched, it was a sad shell of what players had been promised. Outside of the 5v5 change to team comps, and the way that Push maps were introduced (a fine game mode, but not worth a whole new game), people started to question the decision of launching the game without the promised PVE that the Blizzard team said was still coming but just taking a little longer than they had anticipated. But with the entire PVE team being laid off recently, and confirmation from games journo Jason Schrier confirming the death toll of it, OW2 is a failed experiment in how to kill a promising golden goose gaming franchise.
And to be a little more cynical, this really calls into question the legacy of Jeff Kaplan and the decisions that his team made; while Jeff Kaplan left before the launch of Overwatch 2, his team is the one that wanted to make this pivot so hard into PVE style content, and upon reflection really feels like a game director trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
While I don’t think it’s fair to call Overwatch 2 a “dead game” it sure does sadden a massive number of players to think about what they were promised and compare it to what the Overwatch community eventually ended up with.
