this is my first amv!! the black rose arc is one of my favorites in the show because it's baffling the first time you watch it and, unlike a lot of the rest of the show, it isn't dramatically better on the rewatch. mikage's a really dynamic foil for utena and i think the ways tokiko, akio, anthy, and mamiya all relate to each other are a super unappreciated aspect of the show! it also has some of the best non-finale moments (utena punching mikage and the immediate aftermath are sooo iconic)

in the amv i tried to emphasize the utena/mikage parallels and some of the things i think the mikage arc tries to stress (mikage's internalized heteronormativity being one, as well as the beginnings of the idea that utena's quest to be a "prince" maybe isn't all that it's cracked up to be). i hope u enjoy it!!
