Spleen is an organ which is situated in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. The abdomen is divided into 9 quadrants and so the spleen is situated in the left upper quadrant and close to the tail of the pancreas. Laparoscopic splenectomy is a procedure where the spleen is removed through 4 or 5 holes in the anterior abdominal wall and it is done for a lot of conditions like haematological disorders, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, splenetic cysts, splenic abscess. Very commonest indication is or specific trauma. In splenic trauma the surgery is usually but an open method, very rarely the surgery is by a laparoscopic method. In laparoscopic splenectomy there are chances that the patients spleen can be injured and there are other complications that can settle .The advantage of laparoscopic splenectomy are that there are 5 ports that we use and the disadvantage of an open procedure like a cut below the rib cage is avoided. In an open splenectomy there is enormous pain. With laparoscopic splenectomy the pain factor is less. Once the spleen is dissected out we can give a small cut in the mid of the be done and can remove the spleen through an endo bag. It is a plastic bag. The other advantage is a better visibility for the surgeon sometimes the spleen is very he, in which case if we an open procedure the procedure will be very complex, but in laparoscopic splenectomy the visibility is fantastic and we will be able to address or tackle the blood vessels close to the splenic hilum very easily in a laparoscopic procedure.
