HMS Indefatigable, the lead ship of her class, epitomized Admiral Jackie Fisher's concept of a battlecruiser. Commissioned in 1911, she served extensively in the Mediterranean and played a significant role during World War I. She participated in the pursuit of SMS Goeben and Breslau as they sought refuge in the Ottoman Empire. Indefatigable remained in the eastern Mediterranean, ready to intercept any breakout attempts by German ships. She also contributed to the bombardment of Ottoman positions in the Dardanelles. In February 1915, Indefatigable returned to the United Kingdom and joined the 2nd Battle Cruiser Squadron alongside her sister ships Australia and New Zealand. She saw action in the Battle of Jutland, where she sustained heavy damage from shells fired by the German battlecruiser Von der Tann. The fatal blow came when she was struck just above the armored belt, causing a magazine explosion. Within seconds of being hit, at 4:02 PM, her magazines exploded.
