The MakerBot Replicator 2 is an ideal 3D printer for the hobbyist, classroom teacher or student. It has a large enough build plate for intermediate sized prints. The large build volume 11.2 x 6.1 x 6.0" (12.75" diagonally), combined with the consistency of the Replicator 2 printer, make it an industry standard for classroom education. The size of the build platform not only lends itself to larger prints, but allows for the Replicator 2 to print several parts at once. Some newer generation options, like the 5th Generation Replicator, are offering some additional scanning and leveling features that are very desirable, at an additional cost of just over $1000. As an alternative, Autodesk ReCap offers a scanning option that is free for student or teacher download with an Autodesk Academic Resource (website site credential, no costly license required) login credential.
