As sea routes face major challenges, Turkey is leading a major project that could transform trade between Asia and Europe: the Iraq-Turkey-Europe Development Road. This ambitious plan, agreed upon in April 2024 by Turkey, Iraq, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, involves building a 745-mile (1,200-kilometer) network of highways and railways.
The "Development Road" will begin at Iraq's Grand Faw Port, a new deep-water port in the Persian Gulf set to be the largest in the Middle East. It will pass through Iraq, reach Turkey's border, and then extend into Europe.
This project aims to create a faster and cheaper alternative to the Suez Canal by leveraging Iraq's strategic location. Estimated to cost over $24 billion, the Development Road is expected to cut transportation time by ten days compared to the Suez Canal route, offering significant savings in time and money.
