There was something of an answer on Thursday night to the nagging question about what if the existing coronavirus vaccines don't work against the new strains that have turned out to be more infectious and possibly more deadly.
Novavax, makers of a vaccine of which the UK has ordered 60 milion doses, said its final results showed 89% protection, including against the new UK strain.
Preliminary tests on the strain detected in South Africa show it to be effective against that too.
When those findings are checked by the regulators and the vaccine is approved it will be made on Teesside.
As for the existing programme of vaccinations, well, that isn't quite going to plan.
It needs to hit a target of 400,000 every day to make sure the four most-at-risk categories are vaccinated by February the 15th. The figure released today was below that target for the fourth day running, at 282,000.
