When flying with your guitar, there are several things to consider. In my experience (no warranty!), bolt-on guitars can be safely transported in a suitcase after the neck has been unscrewed. Don't forget new strings, a screwdriver, other tools you need and to keep all parts together in a bag.
Neck-through guitars can be transported in the cabin, if a) it fits in the overhead compartment, b) your ticket allows a carry-on (bring the guitar instead of the carry-on), and c) there is space in the aircraft, so don't be the last one to board!
Summary:
For bolt on necks, just transport your guitar well packed in a suitcase. For neck-through guitars, call your Airline to make sure you can transport it in the cabin on your specific flight. Save travels!
