The Zika Virus in English (accent from USA)

Zika is a disease caused by a particular flavivirus. The virus is primarily transmitted to people through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito which also transmits dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. There are reports of sexual transmission and transmission by an infected mother to her foetus.. Most people with Zika virus disease have no symptoms. Others can have fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis (red or pink eye), and joint pain. Some also report muscle pain, malaise or headache. These symptoms normally last for two to seven days. There is currently no specific treatment for or vaccine to protect from Zika virus disease. Experts and researchers are still trying to better understand this disease and its complications. Much remains unknown.

The World Health Organization (WHO) ZIKA VIRUS MICROCEPHALY AND GUILLAIN-BARRÉ SYNDROME SITUATION REPORT 14 APRIL 2016 states, “Based on a growing body of research, there is scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly, Guillain-Barré syndrome and other central nervous system fetal malformations.” And it cites these three studies 12, 13, 14.

This animation describes transmission of the disease, which is primarily by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, and gives additional information about the habits of this mosquito. This video illustrates several important preventive measures you can take using personal protection outside and inside the house and ensuring environmental sanitation around the house; these might help you avoid being bitten by the mosquito. Let’s all assume responsibility every day to help stop the spread of Zika and help prevent the anxiety and illness it might bring to our communities!
