Two days of fairly aimless motorcycling in the middle of the North Island.
The trip started from Napier (as always) and across to Taupo as a the proper starting point.
Tokaanu Historic Wharf at the southern end of Lake Taupo was a lovely site. I bumped in to an archaeologist there and had a nice long chat. Then headed west through Taumarunui, then did a background loop through Ohura. The sun was getting low so I went back to Taumarunui and found a cheap motel. A group of dirt bike / adventure bike rides had booked out the almost the entire motel. They were on a 3 day ride that sounded great fun... but beyond my abilities.
The next day started in fog. I turned off the main road and took a series of backroads until I got to Te Awamutu. Then east to Arapuni where I bumped in to a couple of NZ road racing legends. All the talking, and some poor road choices, had meant the day was well advanced by the time I got to Tokoroa. I allowed myself one more diversion that crossed the Ohakuri Dam.
It was then main roads all the way back to Napier - arriving well after dark.
There was a lot of time in the saddle, but the riding was great. I recommend taking adding some aimlessness to your traveling.
