Morning Glory, Ipomoea tricolor
Morning glories have beautiful trumpet shaped blooms lasting only for
in the morning. Much loved by hummingbirds. Morning glories are tender
annuals but readily reseed themselves. Because they reseed themselves so
readily they can grow to be a nuisance.
An annual is flower that only lives for one year, usually they have longer
bloom periods. A tender plant is one which can not survive freezing
temperatures.
Morning glories are sold as seeds, make sure these seeds come from a
reputable source, as there are similar plants such as Convolvulus can
send out deep roots that are difficult to eradicate. Convolvulus has
smaller flowers and thinner stems. The flowers will be light lavender or
white, but make no mistake it will cover your entire garden.
They can grow to 10 feet in one summer. Plant seeds a quarter inch, after all danger of
frost is past near a trellis or area where vines can cling. Like most
garden plants they enjoy moist well drained soil with plenty of organic
matter. They should have at least 6 hours per day of sun.
Morning glories are toxic to people and pets.
