Me too or me neither?
Expressing agreement in English is common and it can also build rapport between people. Many English learners get confused about when to use “me too” or “me neither” to express agreement. Here are some helpful hints!
Use “me neither” when the speaker uses the word “not” in their sentence. This is negation.
- I do not like potatoes!
- Me neither!
- I don’t like to stay up late.
- Me neither!
(The “not” is hidden in the contraction “don’t”. “Do” + “not” = “don’t”.)
- I don’t hate music
- Me neither!
(Caution: the overall tone of the speaker’s sentence is negative – but it’s the negation “not” that is important!)
Use “me too” when the speaker does not use the word “not” in their sentence. When the meaning of the verb is not negated, or made opposite.
- I like potatoes!
- Me too!
- I like to stay up late.
- Me too!
(The “not” is hidden in the contraction “don’t”. “Do” + “not” = “don’t”.)
- I hate music
- Me too!
(Caution: the overall tone of the speaker’s sentence is negative – but there is no negation!)
