Calif. (Kate Murphy) -- Lawmakers are considering a bill that would ban plastic bags in the entire state.
Supporters say it is better for the environment, but it could eliminate hundreds of jobs.
Members
of the plastic bag industry outside the state capital Tuesday were
urging lawmakers to kill a bill that would ban single-use plastic bags
in large stores statewide.
Opponents say the bill has nothing to do with helping the enviroment and called it an attack on their industry.
"Bottom
line is that our plastic bags are simply better for the environment.
They're 100 percent recyclable, highly reused, and made from natural
gas, not oil."
Proponents say this is already happening in other cities in California such as Truckee and Davis.
There
is a committee vote scheduled for later this week and California's
plastic bag industry is hoping they get through to lawmakers.
