In this excerpt of her address before graduates of the Philippine Military Academy in March 1988, President Corazon Aquino tells PMA graduates to stay out of politics, reminding them of the supremacy of civilian authority over the military, as stated in the Constitution which had been overwhelmingly ratified by the Filipino people a year earlier.
"Policy is the business of civilian authority --- the President and the Congress", the first female Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines told the graduates. "Fighting the enemies marked out by that policy is your business. So long as that distinction is kept in mind, there will be no misunderstanding."
During her presidency, Mrs. Aquino defeated at least six attempts by Marcos loyalists and right-wing military officers to overthrow her democratic government. In 1992, the President handed over the reigns of power to her elected successor, Fidel V. Ramos.
Mrs. Aquino passed away in 2009. Her son, Benigno Aquino III, served as President of the Philippines from 2010 to 2016.
