The song "Oh Re Taal Mile Nadi Ke Jal Mein" from the film Anokhi Raat holds a special place in the hearts of many, not only for its timeless melody but also for the poignant circumstances surrounding its creation. Composed by the legendary music director Roshan, this song stands as a testament to his unparalleled talent and serves as a poignant reminder of his final contribution to the world of music.
Despite being Roshan's last film, "Anokhi Raat" remains a masterpiece, made even more remarkable by the fact that it was filmed in black and white during a time when color films were the norm. The song "Oh Re Taal Mile" encapsulates the essence of life's mysteries, offering no concrete answers but instead embracing the universal truth that some questions may remain unanswered. Mukesh's soulful rendition of the song conveys a sense of solace, reassuring listeners that it's okay not to have all the answers and finding comfort in the freedom to voice one's questions openly.
The song's enduring appeal lies in its ability to evoke profound emotions and resonate with the complexities of human existence. Its lyrical depth, combined with Roshan's evocative composition, has solidified its place as an immortal piece of art, continuing to captivate audiences across generations. "Oh Re Taal Mile Nadi Ke Jal Mein" stands as a poignant tribute to Roshan's musical legacy, leaving an indelible mark on the world of Indian cinema and music.
This is a couplet of a song called Oo Re Taal Mile, a song starring Sanjeev Kumar, sung by Mukesh, and written by Indeevar. Though my knowledge of old hindi songs is limited to the popular ones, but when Aamir Khan talked about this particular song on a TV show, I had to listen to it.
Oo re taal is a beautiful song, just like all other songs sung by Mukesh, but the beauty of the song is not in the melody but in the layers of its lyrics. After hearing this one on a loop I discovered three layers of the song, them being philosophic, romantic and scientific.
When you hear it for the first time, you would understand the lyrics as symbolic of life, and how it is a transient one where what happens to us in the near future, “koi jaane na”. The lyrics would sound philosophical wherein the ephemerality of life comes out in the simple couplets of the first two stanzas.
And when you hear the song for the second time, along with the video, you would see another layer of the song that is the romantic one. In the song, we can see Sanjeev Kumar driving a tonga, with a newly-wed bride sitting right behind him. As the song progresses, we un-envelop that the song is also about the romantic aspirations of a newlywed bride.
The song poetically presents the age-old concept in Indian marriages, wherein it is believed that when a man and a woman marry, they are married not just for this life but for seven consecutive lives, and that is how every Indian girl looks at her marriage. This is beautifully weaved in the third stanza when the poet says that “kal tak jo begaane hai, janmon ke meet hain..” meaning that the two individuals, who were strangers a while back, are now engaged in a relationship that would last for eternity.
The lyrics, on the surface, may sound like lyrics of any other filmi song with a slow melody and use of philosophical words, but the song also has a third reading to it.
Lyricist Indeevar describes the complex and scientific process of a how a water cycle works by using simple, discernible, everyday language. Its magical to see how the poet weaves the process of how water moves across the surface of the land, i.e. how water is collected in a lake, and then this water from lake joins a river, and how this water from lyrics eventually join the vast water spread of a sea. And how this water is evaporated with the help of cosmic entities like the sun and the moon. And then how this precipitated water, condenses and precipitates.
Music and the lyrics of the song also explore the riverine culture of the country. On one hand, the music director of the song, Roshanlal Nagrath, used folk music in the song, with the chorus music supported by the humming of men and women, and the instrumentals creating the ambiance of folk community. The essence of folk culture is also reflected in the lyrics with its description of life cycles.
